Avril 2013 - BEAUTY ISSUE

If one sector today follows the frenetic rhythm of trends, it is Beauty, a sector that continues to accelerate though fashion cycles have slowed down in recent seasons. And while the race for novelty remains a top priority, innovation today goes beyond the product itself. Market structures and relationships with consumers have been jolted by the explosion of blogs that give new accessibility to products via tutorials ; diagnosing skin types and smartphone apps that transform beauty into a precise science which leaves nothing to chance (perfect color, personalized skin care…) ; retail concepts that propose new services : bars (for nails, chignons, bangs…), vending machines, salons in low-cost spaces or private apartments ; ultra-perfect beauty toys that contrast with do-it-yourself craftsmanship ; revolutionary, paradoxical, multi-functional beauty routines (BB & CC Creams) or the idea of layering ; trompe l’œil beauty with a corrector app for Instagram photos, “Photoshop”, skin care effects and contouring ; plus ever tighter links with fashion : seasonal colors, IT nail polish and collaborations (Kenzo + Essie / NellyRodi + Nailmatic)… The market abounds with exciting initiatives which offer endless ideas to adapt transversally!

Discover the transformations that work with seasonal, esthetic trends in our “BeautyLab®” trend book. The Fall-Winter 2014/2015 edition has just been published… plus see our beauty articles at www.nellyrodilab.com!

Frédéric Birault, author of the “Cut by Fred” blog

To accompany this special Beauty trendletter, we interviewed hairdresser Frédéric Birault, author of the “Cut by Fred” blog, who will participate in our Meetings for Innovation in June. Here is his take on current mutations in the hair sector!

1. What have blogs and tutorials changed in terms of consumers’ perception of beauty?
In a way, blogs and tutorials allow women to take charge of their beauty and get simple advice. They have also helped them see beauty as a game.

2. With chignon or bang bars and hair salons dedicated only to color, the haircut is no longer the only way to approach hairstyling. What do you think about this?
It’s true that there are other ways “to play” (once again) with a hair. It becomes an accessory, a material we model or dye. I like these little changes…

3. We see more hair salons in apartments that compete with big chains. What does this new offer bring?
I don’t work that way but I think they offer comfort and intimacy in a reassuring place and give the client a relationship of confidence.

4. What are your favorite trends for Spring-Summer 2013?
Short, tousled, square cuts that I call “torn up”, a bit messy. Or undone chignons that are wet, tactile, even oily.

Every year, NellyRodi invites you for a half-day of conferences to observe the mutations “in the air” and help adapt your company’s strategies to these new circumstances. This 5th edition is all about femininity!
